A Bunch Of Stuff About What We Did Today

I woke up this morning and realized that I had done NO planning at all for this week.  No school planning, no menuing, no nothing.  AT ALL!!  And it's Monday for crying out loud!  Already.  The school stuff isn't such a big deal b/c most of it is done in advance but food??  That's another story.  I just can't easily feed 11+ people 3+ meals a day w/o some forethought.  Sigh......  So I quickly prayed for the Lord to tell me what we could fix for supper tonight. 

Fried rice!  I have everything for fried rice. 

Honey's off to work, a girly is in my bed, and I'm trying to read my Bible.  But she keeps chatting so I send her off after a couple of unheeded warnings. 

2 kids start science classes this morning and need to leave the house at 7:15.  I'm finally out of bed and give them some last minute reminders....sit in the front, be nice, etc.  Eldest is also on the way out the door to school. 

The whole house is up at this point and several kids have already eaten breakfast. Cereal that Jes made last night.  I close the kitchen and get everyone started on chores, teeth, and vitamins.    Brushing Mally's teeth and I remember that this kid seriously needs a bath!  I get her started in my tub and wash her hair.  She can finish the rest.  Off to start laundry. 

Josh is working on kitchen work, the boys are cleaning their room, Lane is working on school, Mally's in the tub, Z is following Momma.  Oh yeah, it's trash day .....BOYS!!! 

10 minutes later the trash is still not out and I have seen them both in the house.  Why???  Because there is some sort of squabble about working together to get it done.  Hmmmm.... and I'm not sure how to handle it right now.  We've had so many talks about faithfulness and diligence and working as for the Lord.  What else can I say?  What other consequence can I give?  So I wait a few minutes and pray and think and check over other kids' chores and Josh's kitchen work.  And then it hit me.  I don't hafta say anything new.  The message is the same, never changing.  I just have to be consistant with the repetition and the reproof that brings wisdom.  We talk again, the same conversation.  But I don't really mind.

They hate this!  Losing their lunch is not such a big deal, but snacks??  Gasp!

~13yo daughter is our bread maker.  She's in chemistry class and the job falls to me.  How I wish I had planned ahead!!  We don't even have bread in the freezer to pull out.  So I get it started while kids have started on school at the table.  Except the boys.  I had to send them back to their room b/c it was *not* clean. 

~I feel behind.  I haven't even done Bible with the kids yet and this is usually done at breakfast.  But it's ok.
My 7yo comes to me to show off his math.  He's almost done (!) which is amazing for him, especially for a Monday.  Happy momma. 

~Bread is rising and I call everyone to the living room with their Bibles.  We're starting a study on Matthew today and I think we're all going to learn so much from this.  I teach them how to make a list for Jesus, Holy Spirit, and Angels.  I'm excited about this one. 

~I leave them to finish their lists and roll out bread and switch laundry.  And while I'm at it, it's almost snack time so I might as well make some popcorn.  This draws a crowd with the littles and ZBoy helps me by getting out the coffee filters and stirring in the coconut oil and salt.  But ya know what?  I made way too much!  Since the boys lost their snack today, Meg's at school, and 2 others are in science it leaves me with a small bunch.  Oh well, I'll send some to work with Honey. 

~10am.  Snack time and reading with Mally and Z.  I'm very happy at how well their reading is coming along!  And they LOVE to do it which makes it a breeze.  Lane takes the boys and teaches them history.  Everyone left all their Bibles on the couch and coffee table so I call them back in for a clean up and get Nate started on his piano practice. 

~When the littles are finished reading I send them outside.  It's a beautiful day!  Nate and I work on his school and I find that he's almost finished with everything!  Big surprise for me.  I'm sooo proud of his hard work today (especially after the trash incident).  He gets a COW present! 

~11:10am.  Spelling.  2 less kids makes this go a little faster today.  Nate finishes school and goes outside with his siblings.  I gather the bigger boys for science.  And I can't decide...experiment (which would only take a minute) or the next lesson?  Both, since I saved some time on spelling.

Finishing up science and here's where things start falling apart.  Mally's crying in the backyard.  Not uncommon for her.  I bring her in and tell her to sit on the fireplace b/c I have some loose ends to tie up with the boys and can't talk to her now.  Then all at the same time everybody comes home.  Honey's home for lunch, the science kids come in with our friend, and Meg's home.  I am NOT ready for lunch yet.  Our friend stays for awhile and visits while I'm trying to put something together quickly.  Honey's looking through the fridge and my little kitchen is crowded.  I pull out 6 cans of tuna and mix together some tuna sandwiches.  Not enough for everybody but it's a start.  Next I slice 1/2 a loaf of bread and make some cheese toast.  Add some peaches and call it lunch.  Birdy's still on the fireplace.

~But now it's over.  The afternoon should be better since most ppl are done with school, Honey's back at work, and the kitchen is clean from lunch.  Eldest takes Lane to work for me giving me an unexpected afternoon at home.  Thank you Love!

~I get serious about a menu since I don't want tomorrow to look like today.  But I can't think of much.  I'm blank.  I come up with 5 dinner ideas and it will have to do for now.  Made a grocery list and put together our tea snack. 

~3:15pm.  Tea Time!  Milk and toaster strudels my MIL bought the kids.  Yay for something quick and easy today.  We're reading Little House In The Big Woods right now.  I love these books.  I love tea time. 

Pick up the house, 3:00 dishes, and fold 4 loads of laundry.   And I still have a son working on school.  He's crying when I tell him he's missing soccer practice if school's isn't done.  We talk about diligence.  Didn't we just have this conversation??

And there ya have it.  A whole day at our house on a Monday.  Thank you if you have hung in here til the end!

Squeeeeal!!

Our new bed from a garage sale this week!

I never ever ever buy such a big ticket item so this was a BIG deal.  Plus we've never had bed furniture before...just mattress and frame.  So it was a double big deal. 

I love it. 

A Little Bit Of Lately

It seems like the school year has started for everybody now.  The parks are not crowded and story time is back to the usual little bunch.  Piano starts back for us this week, chemistry and micro biology classes next week.  Then we'll be able to settle into a new normal routine. 

This week is full of company and running kids to their various jobs and errands.  I am hopelessly behind in just about everything and trying really hard for it not to make me crazy.  It'll get done eventually, right? 

How are you doing on your Sept challenge?  Are you getting up on time?  I'm hit and miss.  I'm actually missing a bit on purpose though b/c I'm walking some mornings depending on my schedule that day. 

Speaking of walking, guess what?!  I took Joey today.  The poor dog almost had a heat stroke one night this summer so he's been grounded.  This morning was nice and cool and I invited him along.  But that's not all.  It was easy to take him.  I could handle the leash with both hands since I'm a permissive walker Joey likes to change sides.  Ahhhh the freedom of pain free mobility!  (Are you tired of hearing that yet?)

And LOOK at the fall clothes!  It was so much fun.  And I've never had so many new clothes all at the same time.  It turned out that each piece cost around $3.  THAT is a bargain folks.  And several things were brand new.

Awana Night 2

Last week was CRAZY.  And I've been a little concerned wondering how the year was going to go and just what happened to my sweet boys to make them lose their minds.  But this week??  WOW what a change!  My sweeties are back.  They were quiet, well behaved, and ready to work.  I was so blessed and told them over and over again.

This week we prayed for Cole's hamster's broken leg and Squirtle the turtle who dried up and died. 

Everyone was working through their start zones and passing off Verses left and right. 

Look who's back!!  He didn't come last week and I was really hoping he hadn't moved again.  I tell ya, this kid is special. 

And girls!  Hey, maybe that's why my boys were so good.(?) 

And my 2nd grade class was precious.  My new girl, Desiree, is so excited about church and coming to Awana.   She's like a sponge soaking up all she's learning. 

Tonight we had an extra treat.  My man led worship for everyone before we got started.   Of course I love to hear him play and sing. 

It's going to be a great year! 

Miscellaneous Monday

RAIN!!  Glorious rain!  And thunder and lightening to go with it.  That's my kinda night!

~One time Amy posted about cleaner and it kinda inspired me (even though I forgot to tell her).  Cleaning is my thing.  Sometimes.  At least I should say that doing dishes is my best talent even if Bekah won't let me enter the show with it.  Anyhow, I made myself some vinegar cleaner for the bathroom and LOVE it. 

I even love the smell.  Cause I like anything vinegar-y.  It's helped me to keep with my Flylady swishing and swiping routine in the morning even. 

So after everyone who wants to use my toothbrush has exited my bathroom then I pull out the cleaner and spray away.  All over the sink and counter.  Then I go to the pot and spray all over that.  When all that is wiped up, then I unscrew the lid and pour a little into the potty water and swish it around.  Ta Da!  And everything sparkles. 

~Our ice maker rebelled.  Water on the floor and sheets of ice in the freezer.  Mess. 
So today we had to unplug and empty out the whole thing.  Which required cleaning out the fridge and freezer in the garage to make room and pulling out all the rice cakes and cookies that really didn't need to be in the freezer anyway.  It's been a huge job. 

But the biggest part was the cleaning it all up.  In 2 years we've never moved the fridge to clean behind there. Ewwww!!!  I gave that job to my son telling him that anything that gross has to be a man job.  We took out every shelf, every drawer, every everything and cleaned it all up.  But that part wasn't so bad.  And now it's like a brand new fridge. 

A brand new fridge with a busted ice maker that is.  But maybe not.  We're still trying to figure it out.  Maybe someone just put it in wrong.  Time will tell. 

In any case it looks like sandwiches are on the menu tonight b/c the kitchen has been torn apart all day. 

~We got to babysit Little Man James today and visit with the grandparents.  I don't know what my kids will do when we go back to a 5 day school week. 

Here's a Verse that caught my eye recently that I've been mulling over...

Ordering my ways before the Lord, seeking first the Kingdom, acknowledging Him in all things.... I wanna be a Jotham! 

A Good Habit

On school days we have it in our schedule to be ready for breakfast at 7:30am.   Being "ready for breakfast" means making your bed, cleaning your room, and being dressed.  For the most part the kids hit it pretty regularly. 

But me?  Well sometimes.  Sometimes not.  And I always have a good excuse of course.  Like I spent too much time on the computer I didn't sleep well the night before, I'm not finished with my Bible time, I don't feel well.  In any case, I'm being a bad example to my kids.  I should be the one that is ready first. 

I read somewhere that it takes about 30 days to establish a habit.  So for the month of September I've decided to make it my goal to be out of my room (roomed and groomed) on time.  Or earlier than on time.  With my room clean.  And bed made.  Bible time finished.  And dressed for the day. 

I was hoping that there would be some others that might want to join me and start a new habit or goal for September.  It can be anything...big or small.  Like finish the book you started, take your vitamins, don't yell at anybody, exercise, whatever.  What do you think?  You have 2 more days to pray about some area that needs improvement.   And if you're in, just leave a comment and tell me about it and we can help keep each other accountable.

A New Realization

A slight tragedy happened in TaeKwonDo class this week. 

As belt testing approaches, stripe testing becomes very important.  You must have 5 stripes in order to test.
Thursday was stripe testing for forms.  Our class is a funny mixture of laid back yet strict.  Mr. T is serious, yet fun and stripe testing was both of those. 

But when testing was over I saw Mr. T swat down to talk to Josh.  And while every other kid was visiting with each other, doing their own thing and oblivious to what was going on there, every one of my kids was paying full attention to Mr. T and Josh.  It didn't take long to figure out what was being said.  My kids' desperate glances over to me, Josh's head in his hands, the arms around him, and the sad faces gave it away. 

He didn't get his stripe. 

In the car on the way home, my kids were talking about how unfair they felt it was.  How Josh's form was good and how stripes were issued to those less athletically inclined.  It didn't make sense to any of them and they all felt the injustice.  I learned later that 2 of my kids declined their own stripes so Josh would not have to line up alone since they line up by rank. 

Days have passed since then and I'm still thinking about it.  But the thing that sticks out the most is the love that my kids poured out on their brother.....including Efum who heard about it later but is very familiar with Josh's form.   It was as serious to each of them as if it were themselves who did not get the stripe.  And while I'm sure Josh will not see the good of this for a long time, my momma heart rejoices at this opportunity of failure where his whole family rallied around him to love on him.  It's such a tiny insignificant thing, but someday when he faces a real loss or failure I hope he remembers what a support he has in all of us.

Belt testing is still a couple weeks away and he will have another chance to earn his stripe.  I can almost hear the the cheering of 9 loving siblings.

Bean Burger Recipe

(Try this one Amy!)
My family was having burgers and hot dogs for supper so I thought I'd try yet another bean or veggie burger recipe.  Usually these don't turn out so well for me.  But THIS one is a keeper!  And it has no egg.  Bonus!

1/2 chopped onion (I used red.)
3/4 C. chopped mushrooms
1 garlic clove minced
3 green onions (I left these out)
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp parsley
1 tsp salt/pepper
1/4 C. ground flax seed
1 can pinto beans, drained (I used chili beans.)

Saute veggies in a little olive oil.  In a bowl, mash the beans and add the spices and flax.  Add the veggies.  Form into patties.  It said to let them sit awhile to let the flax absorb moisture and help them hold together better.  I didn't have time to do this and they held together perfectly.  In fact, they are supposed to be pan fried but I thought I'd take a chance and put them on the grill with the real burgers.  I even forgot to ask Honey to be careful with them but they did not fall apart at all!

1st Night Of Awana

Here's my new class of 3rd graders.  7 boys that grew up SOOOO much during the summer!  Really I can't believe the difference in them in only a few months.  And as you can see it was a bit wild and crazy.  But I think that's mostly b/c it was the first night.  I don't think it will take us long at all to find our new groove.  Everybody's working out of new books, earning totally different awards, and learning new stuff. 

And wow!  there is such a different dynamic.  My head was spinning a bit by the end of the night.  And it was easy to see that what used to work for my 2nd graders will not fly for these (same) 3rd graders.  But that's ok.  It's good for me to grow and adjust and I'm looking forward to being stretched. 

I had one newbie that fit right in and said the best part of his whole day was meeting 2 new friends that were in class.  Huh, that was my best part of the day too. 

Nick was back.  :-D  But not BigBoy or Shadiamond.  :-( 

The thought occurred to me of how blessed I am to be privileged to watch God work this year.  I'm so thankful to be a part of it.

Dinner!  And have I mentioned before that there's always enough?  Even though you never know how many will come?  Ms. Joy told me tonight that they were NOT expecting that many.  But there was still more than plenty. 

One of my new faves.  (Is it ok if I say that?)  Hayden is in my little 2nd grade class this year.  His brother is in my 3rd grade one.  There are 4 cutsie 2nd graders including 2 princess girls.  GIRLS?  In MY class??  Love it. 

There were so many kids tonight.  Lots of new kids in every class it seemed.  New workers even! 

My oldest son has 4 little bitties in his PreK class and loved it.  Meg is working with the youth.  Lane is in games with E.  LB is all over the place helping out wherever she's needed. 

I think it'll be a great year!

Babysitting J

We had the fun of babysitting a friend's baby today.

J is fun for everybody.  I love the opportunity for my younger kids to be around babies.  And J is sooo easy to babysit.  He never cries...at least with us.  He smiles all the time and is just an all-around pleasant fella.

We enjoy him so much that one of my kids asked, "What will we do when he grows up?" 

Good thing his momma is expecting another one.  Then we'll get to play with two!

Mrs. Coffman

Last night my son was scooping ice cream.  We have a really nice ice cream scoop and one of his siblings was commenting on it.  Years ago it was given to us by our sweet neighbor, Mrs. Coffman, along with a huge sack of ice cream.  It was a pretty common occurrence.  Mrs. Coffman would randomly bring us a big cookie cake or fancy Easter baskets or thoughtful presents for Christmas. 

She hired my kids for watering and mail pick up and paid them WAYYY too much.  She was sweet and precious and when she passed away a few years ago it was a very sad day over here.  A big loss.

As we were talking about her last night my son said, "She was one of my favorite people in the whole world."  Several of us agreed. 

And I thought about what it takes to be someone's favorite person.  Mrs. Coffman certainly had it figured out. 

This morning I was reading in 2 Chron 21.  It says that when Jehoram died, "he departed with no one's regret."  (v. 20)  He was a self-serving, power hungry, God hater.  Nobody mourned his passing.

Mrs. Coffman was exactly the opposite of Jehoram.  And even years later we still miss her. 

Hard Thoughts To Reconcile

~My son read us a story about an Arab and a camel.  The camel was cold outside the tent and asked his master if he could just stick his head inside to warm up.  The Arab agreed.  The camel then asked if it would be ok if he put his neck in too.  The Arab agreed.  It was an awkward position for the camel so he asked permission to bring his front legs in too.  The Arab said "ok".  And since he was holding the door open and letting the cold in he asked if he could just come all the way in. 

But the tent was small and now way too crowded for both of them.   The camel told the Arab that since he was smaller it would be a good idea for him to stay outside the tent and let the camel have the whole thing!

The point of the story was how sin very slowly creeps into our lives. 
I've been thinking about this the last couple of days.  And how things start out small but grow huge and become such a habit that it seems impossible to break.  For me, I'd say it is impatient words/looks/attitude.
I catch myself getting irritated over tiny things that really don't matter. 

~As I was walking tonight I was noticing how beautiful my neighborhood is.  The lawns are manicured just so.  There are some huge fancy houses.  Big cars.  Nothing out of place or ugly.  Perfect looking on the outside I suppose.  Spoiled people living cushy lives.  That's me. 

But if I had it to do all over again it would not look like this.  I would've started out as a career missionary in a very poor country.  Married my same Tall, Dark, and Handsome and had all our 9 kids living far different lives than they do now. 

And yes, we are involved in ministry here.  But it's clean and neat.  And I kinda prefer messy. 
I'd miss my hot showers, my netbook, my iPhone, and 2-ply toilet paper but somehow I feel like life would be so FULL.  A world where there were fewer choices and nobody wasted good drinking water on grass. 

So I wonder...how do I bring the messy into my neat and perfect?   Or how do I give up the pristine for the cluttered?  How do you give up the American dream that most folks view as an entitlement?   That "entitlement" that could be better described as an entanglement.  The entanglement keeps feeding me lies that say it can't be done.  But I'm pretty sure it can.  I just don't know how yet. 

~Awana starts in only 4 more days.  Count them.  FOUR!  And I smile every time I think about it.  I wonder if I'll have any girls this time?   I wonder if Nick will come back this year?  And oh Lord, PLEASE bring the Moody kids back.   My girls will be with me again and I'm watching to see what my son's involvement might be. 

And just in case you forgot....here's a couple of my cuties.  Smart, funny, rowdy, and occasionally naughty.  Just the way I like 'em!

Precious souls entrusted to me for a short time.  And I'm praying for a way to impact them for eternity. 

The Survivor

A strange thing happened in our gold fish pond.  All of a sudden our fish started dying.  We've had these same 5 goldfish for maybe close to a year now.  They lived through the winter when the ice was so thick you couldn't break it with your shoe.  They lived even though we never fed them.  They started out little ...just feeder fish that cost about sixteen cents each.  But grew pretty big. 

I guess maybe it was the intense heat.   Or maybe it was the other (ugly) fish my son caught at the park and put in there.  Who knows. 

But we decided to rescue this guy before it was too late.  He has always been the fave.  Bigger than the rest and white.  We caught him and put him in a goldfish bowl in my daughters' room.  He looks huge in there and doesn't have much room to swim.  But he's awfully pretty with the white rocks. 

And I'm guessing it's like a resort to him now b/c he's actually getting fed!

Less Is More...In Their Opinion

Aren't they adorable??  They both lost a tooth on the same day so we got to go on a double tooth fairy date.  That's 2 in the same week!  Not only that, but since G'ma is in town she's passing out big bucks for these lost teeth.  Bonus. 

See the guy behind them?  When I turned the phone around to show them their picture they erupted with laughter and said, "MOM, you got the guy in the back!!" 

I love the things they think are funny. 

2 More Days Until Forever

In 2 more days public school starts in my town.  If we didn't homeschool I would only have 2 more days with this beautiful princess of a girl at home.  I can't even imagine!!  And she would only have 2 more days to play and work with her brothers and sisters and momma all day.  And only 2 more days of lunches with Daddy.  Perish the thought!! 

And for that matter I guess it would be 2 more days with this rascal too since he's big enough for PreK. 
But yet so little! 

So you wanna see what these guys are doing this year instead?
They are only 18 months apart so I can do so much of their stuff together. 

Reading -
ZBoy is going through 100 Easy Lessons Book.  He listened in on Mally doing it last year so he's very familiar with it.
Mally is reading her children's Bible.  She finished the 100 Lessons plus the Bob books.  After her Bible we'll move on to some nature stories.

Math -
We use the calendar to learn about the days, weeks, numbers, odd days, even days, seasons
100 chart for skip counting, odd/even numbers
Money (their favorite!) I have a tupperware container full of dollars and coins.  They grab out a handful and count what they have.  They learn value, the names of each one, how to substitute.  Then we put everyone's money together and count that. 
Flash Cards for adding and subtracting. 
They are about to start Saxon Math 1.  Zboy in the beginning of the book and Mally further back. 
Rods for adding and subtracting

Writing -
Mally loves spelling!  Her handwriting is not so great so we do lots of coloring together.  ZBoy does NOT like to color. 
Copy work.  Just letters and numbers. 
Later in the year I will have her start Bible copy work like the rest of her siblings. 
I'm not too concerned with ZBoy's writing at this point. 

All this takes me about an hour.  It's scheduled while the rest of my kids are working on math.  They are in the dining room, we are in the living room.  Everyone is relatively quiet. 

And usually eating popcorn.  That helps!

Thank you God for the freedom to homeschool and be home with my kiddos forever. Or at least until God tells us to do something else.

This Weekend

Another tooth out!  The tooth fairy took him to McDonalds.  I think I'm drawing the line on the tooth fairy dates.  No more McDonalds.  Too dirty.   But (and I loved this!) Jess noticed it was dirty and I didn't even say anything!  Good boy. 

Jess is such a friendly kid.  He makes friends wherever he goes.  McDonalds was no different.  But whyyyyy does this keep happening to him?  And just him??  He meets a kid at the park and the kid will challenge him to a fight.  And weird as it sounds, it's sorta done good naturedly.  Everybody's smiling.  Nobody's mad.  Just wondering if you want to try to beat me up kinda thing.  And Jes is always willing (still good naturedly) but then the game is changed to something else.  I would tend to think that it's just boys talking smack but this sorta thing never happens to his 4 brothers.  Only him.  And he's the friendliest, smilingest one of the bunch! 

~The family is in town!!  We've been waiting and waiting all summer and FINALLY they're here!  Lots of G'ma fun going on. 

~10 more days until Awana!!  And I'm on the edge of my seat!  I can't wait to meet my new kids and see my old ones.  Love Love Love.  And then I will bore you every week with pure goodness. 

~I just invited my first guest to Lane's graduation this spring.  Jumping the gun?  We're hoping for some CO peeps!  I do miss those sweet friends. 

~Football on TV is a comforting sound.  I'm not interested in football.  At all!  But everybody's happy.  Nobody cares what I'm doing.   People can help themselves to snacks.  Everyone's good. 

And since nobody cares what I'm doing, I'm thinking on some scrapbooking.  Except my bed isn't made.  And I always tell my girls, "The fun is more fun when the work is all done."  So I guess I better go make my bed.

We had a break from the intense heat with a beautiful morning!  And since public school hasn't started yet, we walked over to the playground for some park time.

All of a sudden I was reminded of when I only had little kids.   I was busy and tired, yet had so much more time than I realized.  It was nice to step away from school and the harder things of the day and just enjoy the giggles and wonder of the little ones.  It was a sweet morning with this 2nd generation of littles. 

Right before it was time to leave I see 2 of my older sons coming up on their ripsticks.   The older kids always add a new element of fun!

Shiny!

I hardly ever, like almost never wear makeup. 

But today Eldest was ordering some Avon stuff and I ordered some lip gloss.

Girl Time

I gotta start the post with this picture b/c I sooo love it.  These guys are great friends and it makes my momma heart smile.

But that's not what this post is about so on to business...

My mom invited me for a girls' weekend last weekend with some out-of-town relatives.  Who could resist? 

I was especially looking forward to spending some time with my grandmother and her 2 sisters.  My grandmother is 80yo and the baby of 3 girls.  When they get together they have so much fun and I didn't wanna miss it.  Unfortunately, neither of my aunts could make it.  :(

We drove to Tyler to play around in those stores since the big town of Quitman has practically nothing.   Shopping with Grandmother is a blast!  I spent most of the time with her looking at the stuff she wanted to look at.  She's never liked shopping alone.  We looked at phones, and played with all the GPSes.  When Best Buy lost its luster, we called mom (somewhere in the store) and told her we were moving on to the next one.  We tried on shoes and looked at all kinds of junk we'd never buy.

Then back home for lots of marble games.  I even won once I think.  

I didn't get any pix of PawPaw this time so I'll just tell you a story instead. 
We were sitting at the table and PawPaw had a big full Sonic drink.  He picked it up and stuck his thumb right through the styrofoam making a big hole with drink pouring out the side!  He tried to block the hole and make his way to the sink but I guess he squeezed it too hard and it was coming out the top and through the straw!  Huge mess all over his clothes, all over the floor, all over everywhere! 

His reaction was priceless.  "Now look what I done!" 

We ended the day with me teaching them my favorite card game...baseball.  Ever play it?  It's fun.

Fun At The Farm

Lane, CT, and I just got home from a weekend trip to TX to visit my parents.  Lane and CT were on their own for some of the time while I went shopping with the ladies of the family.  They LOVED it.  They hijacked the golf cart and explored all over the place, finding animal skeletons, rummaging the creek bed, looking at fish, raiding the fridge, eating ice cream, visiting with Gram.  They they started all over again. 

Sunday morning Dad was home and we went fishing in this little bitty pond that's about to dry up.  They were supposed to catch the fish and move them to the big lake. 

Not the biggest catch of the day, but pretty cute.

This is Lane's biggest.  See CT in the back with the one that got away?  His line snapped.

Meet Roscoe.  Isn't he just adorable?  I got to feed him his food pellets and let him slobber all over me.  He's almost like a puppy.

Oh yeah.  See him?  I named him Smokey.  I wish he would stay this tiny and precious.  But by the next time we visit he'll be a real cat.  Wild, not letting you play with him, only wanting food.  He'll still be my favorite though. 

We didn't get to see much of Nana this time b/c she had to work.  Sad. 

I called Honey about 1/2 way home during a bathroom break and mentioned that we could've stayed a couple more days.  CT corrected me by saying he could've stayed a LOT more days.  Honey's answer was something like "Well you could've.  We would be ok around here. "   At that point the kids were begging me to turn around!

Things I'm Thinking About...

I find myself sometimes too tired to pray.  Or too mad.  Or too distracted.  Or too.....fill in the blank. 

"But I say, walk by the Spirit."  Gal 5:16

And if my mind is too preoccupied by the concerns of this world then I am certain that I am not keeping in step with the Spirit.  

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."  Gal 5:22-23

And you can be sure my attitude is not characterized by any of the above!  

Another thing.  I've discovered I get too busy taking care of things that I neglect the people.  Messy closets, dirty ovens, dinner to cook, school to plan.  Things with no eternal value.  I need fewer things. 

Praise Report!

I am feeling SOOOOOO much better! 

There has been a big change in just this week. 
And tonight, guess what I did?  I used the stapler!!  One handed.  Oh yeah. 

I find myself doing more and more normal type things and I can't help but draw attention to it whenever someone else is in the room. 

"Look at me carry this!"  "Watch me open this jar!" 
It's such an accomplishment that I want to show off.  

And now I can...
start the car
brush my teeth
pick up a pillow
brush my hair....with ONE hand!!

Happy happy.  I got so used to hurting that it became a new normal.  And I would down play it b/c I always knew it could be even worse.  I forgot how good it feels to feel better and to move easily. 

So far my blood work has been good with the Methotrexate and I haven't had any side effects.  My attitude is better too....and that was a biggie. 

My next goal is to wear my wedding ring.  Maybe next week??

Kitchen Talk

Can you believe how hot its been for so long??  Eldest left for camp today and I hope she doesn't melt! 

It seems like I could think up some cold dinner ideas but so far all I came up with was ice cream.  Is it ok to eat ice cream for supper for 4 weeks in a row??

Last week I made a new recipe.  I totally messed it up.  The flavor seemed good though so I decided to give it another shot.  Only following the directions this time. 

It's called Black Bean and Sausage Cornbread Casserole.

Only mine doesn't have sausage, which implies that I didn't really follow the directions anyway.  But here's my version...

1 onion

1/2 C. green pepper (I didn't have one.)

4 cans of black beans

1 can of rotel, drained

A handful of cilantro

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup buttermilk

1 C. self-rising cornmeal mix.

So to start with I didn't have the cornmeal mix.  So I did this...

2/3 C. flour

1/2 C. cornmeal

3 T. sugar

1 T. baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

Now saute the onion on the stove.  Add the beans, cilantro, rotel and salt.  Pour all that into a 9x13.  I doubled this for my family but I didn't double the beans.  Mix the buttermilk into the cornbread mix and pour over the bean mixture.  Bake at 425 until the cornbread is done. 

Here's what it looks like before....

Serve it with Mexican Sauce.  This needs a new name.  Mexican sauce?  Way too plain. 

Really tasty though and resembles enchilada sauce.

1 28oz can of tomato puree

1/4 onion, finely chopped

1 T. oil

1 garlic clove

1/4 tsp cumin

1/2 tsp oregano

4 tsp chili powder

2 tsp salt.

Saute the garlic and onion in the oil.  Add everything else and simmer on the stove for while.  Maybe 20 minutes and adjust the spices. This will keep in the fridge in a jar for awhile.

Then I made this.  Not too pretty to photograph, huh? 

This is guacamole made from peas.   Cause maybe you're out of avocados, or maybe you're allergic to them, or maybe you don't want to pay the ridiculous price for them, or maybe you don't  like them.....could this even be true??  Probably not. 

Anyhow, I did this in my blender and made it just the way I would regular guac...which is different everytime depending on what I have on hand. 

And see this?  I LOVE IT!!   It's right up there with my Blendtec.  It's the new rice cooker I got for my b-day.  My old rice pot was great and I would've never guessed I wanted a different one.  But oh, this is over the top!  First of all it's bigger so it makes more rice.  But not just rice.  It heats leftovers, makes soup, browns meat, steams veggies, and can even bake a cake.   I haven't tried the cake button yet though.  Things I used to do with my crockpot are easier and faster with this rice pot. 

Do you have a rice cooker?  They are so handy.  You can throw in rice, beans, salsa, and water.  Push a button and it's dinner in one pot.   Add some chips and guacamole and voila!!  We went to FL years ago for vacation and I used it in the hotel room to make some quick meals for our family. 

Today I used it to make soup even though it was 112 outside.  Is that weird?

Spotlight On 2nd Grade

Confession:  Organizational tools make me giddy.  It was actually fun working in my school closet today adding the rest of the kids' school stuff in their boxes.  And you wouldn't believe the difference it's made in the closet.  Before .... huge mess.  After..... Awwww.

This is my 2nd grader's box.  Wanna know what he's doing this year? 

Well for 2nd grade I like to focus on the basics and weak areas.  Science, history, grammar type things take more of a back seat and will get more attention later.  For now, he needs to work on his reading, vocabulary, writing, and math.  He's a fairly strong reader and can do most of his math on his own with me just checking and guiding his work.  I will spend most of my school time with him listening to him read, going over his writing, and helping him with his vocabulary.   Most of the other stuff he will do on his own.

In his folder he has a checklist of all he needs to do everyday.  Nothing fancy, just a list I typed up and divided into 5 for each day of the school week.  I use the same one for all the little boys.   

Bible - We do this all together in the morning.  I read.  And we work on our memory work and/or catechism.  Right now we're reading through John and then we watch that chapter on the Gospel of John movie.  We save them up and watch several chapters at the same time. 

Later they all do some sort of copy work from the Bible.  For the younger kids I print it out on the computer in a larger font that's easier to copy than from their Bibles.  I keep these in a 3 ring binder separated with tab dividers for each book of the Bible.  The thought behind it is that by the time they graduate they'll have the whole Bible in their own handwriting from the time when they are little bitty to when they have pretty penmanship.  With my boys, I'm not sure the pretty penmanship will ever happen.  :-)

History - Lane is teaching all the boys history this year.  She'll take about 30 minutes a day working with them on Abeka history and asking questions or working on projects.

Science - Abeka.  He will do most of this on his own.  Just reading with probably no experiments unless something just catches his eye.   However, he will participate in the Apologia experiments that his brothers are doing. 

Saxon Math- He can do most of this on his own.

Flash cards with Mally and ZBoy.   He'll spend 15 minutes working with his younger siblings teaching them sight words and math. 

Wordly Wise 3000 - vocabulary.  This is new for him and he'll probably need some help at first.

Spelling Power - Everyone does this.  Different words of course.  It takes me about 30 minutes to do 6 spelling tests. 

Various readers - I haven't put together his reading list yet. 

Grammar - We do this all together.  Mostly b/c I HATE grading grammar.  So I use Easy Grammar and copy selected sentences to the white board.  Then I use the question-answer flow from the Shurley method to label all the parts of speech.  A lot of times I will copy the Scripture we're memorizing and do that instead.  Anyway, I don't consider this a big deal in 2nd grade. 

Writing - I don't use a particular writing program but I like using Write Start as a guide.  I have them write whatever they want.   I  check it, correct it, and have them re-write or type it.  They usually choose to write about something fun that happened recently.  If they can't think of anything, I sometimes pick a picture out of a magazine and have them make up a story about it.  This year I'm going to encourage them to mail out their writings to bless others. 

That's it for 2nd grade around here.  Depending on how diligently he works, he ought to finish around lunch time.  I hope.  Diligence is something that we're working on though, so we'll see.

First Day Of School!

OK, before we start let's just pause to be impressed.  I took this pic on my new phone.  But then I didn't know what to do with it.  Like how do I make it go from my phone to my blog?  Well Honey very matter of factly told me that he'd hafta set it up for me.  But nooooo......I want to learn to do it myself.  So guess what ya'll? 

I FIGURED IT OUT!!  I know!  Without help.  None.  Just me. 

What I didn't figure out was how to upload more than one pic at a time to the same post.  Maybe later. 

Ok, back to the First Day Of School!!

Kinda weird b/c we school year round so there's never been an official first day.  Until now.  I got the idea from Teri Maxwell who always starts the new year with new school supply surprises. 

So that's what I did.  I bought everybody stuff they needed plus fun stuff they didn't need.  

I put a big note on the white board announcing that tomorrow (today) would be our First Day Of School.

Of course the kids were surprised.  And confused.  And asked me what it meant.

But I told them to wait and see. 

This morning I set out all the surprises at their places at the table and called them out.  SURPRISE!!!

I would like to show you everybody's happy faces but I haven't figured it out.  Didn't I already talk about that?

Well trust me, it was fun. 

Some of the new things....

~rubbermaid boxes for the younger kids to keep all their school stuff contained.  Last year I used laundry baskets.  Big mess always.  Too much space and the holes in the basket let pencils escape. 

~color coded folders, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, everything for the boys.  This way we'll always know whose is whose.  And if you lose your pencils or break them or sharpen them too much you can buy a pencil from mom for a quarter.  Can you tell that we had pencil issues last year? 

~flip flops for Eldest.  What could I get her?  Her scholarship pays for all her stuff and I didn't wanna leave her out.  (I have better ideas for next year though!)

~Josh has his own calculator to check his math work.  Happy boy!

~Socks and underwear.  Zboy is thrilled with his Lightening McQueens.

~A few school books that they haven't seen yet. 

And after all that we didn't even use them.  I told them today was like "registration" day and we'd just look at the new stuff and talk about our plans for the upcoming year.  Even that was fun b/c they weren't expecting new plans!

~So now I can text. And tell you what the temperature is. And make a grocery list on my phone. And read my Bible without having to carry it to church. And, and, and......

~Today is my little Shadiamond's b-day. My sweet one and only in my Awana class. She is still away from her family and I'm praying for her. I sooo hope they will come back when all this is over.

~Tomorrow I go for my first localized injection. I'm praying it's my only one.

~For those of you who live in FSM, did you know that the cheap movie theater is back down to $2.50? Maybe it's been that way for a long time though. I think the last movie Honey and I went to see was Ice Age. And we were late and the guy only charged us a dollar! Anyway, on our anniversary we went to see Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Don't bother. It's clean and has some funny parts but there is the OMG issue as well as some disrespectful jokes about elderly ppl.

But we did see a pretty good movie we got from the library called Keeping the Promise. Sweet family movie.

~We got a piano! For FREE! And we love it. Jes has hardly been off it since we got it. We are so thankful.

~The Escape is wrecked. Again. Not as bad this time though. I'm wondering how we'll ever survive 7 more teenage drivers. Honestly I hafta say that driving has been the scariest thing we've faced as parents so far. Potty training, screaming fits, sleepless nights are nothing in comparison.

~Don't forget to place your Azure Standard order tomorrow! I hope I don't forget.

New Jurisdictions!

This summer has been a good opportunity to do some re-org. The first was fixing up our chore list...or jurisdictions as we call them. It was a bit lopsided as some ppl had too much and some had too little. Also there has been a lot of growth since I assigned them last time and some kids are ready for some heavier work.

So here's how it looks now (in addition to their usual room and groom).......

Lane (17yo) - living room, mowing, pets, history with little boys, big trash cans, making salad dressing, kitchen work Tues & Sat w/Jes.

CT (15yo) - school closet, pool maintenance, larger yard chores, game closet, making salad, emptying Wall-e (trash compactor), kitchen work Wed & Sun.

LB (13yo) - dining room (Mon and Fri), kitchen work Thurs & Sun, ironing, matching socks, vegan cereal, girls' bathroom, daily bread baking

Josh (10yo) - laundry (we all help fold and put away), dining room, pantry, recycling cans, kitchen work with Meg

Jes (8yo) - cereal, dog poop, table duty, boy's bathroom, recycling cans, kitchen work with Lane

Nate (7yo) - laundry room, table duty, dog poop, kitchen work with LB

Mally (5yo) - music room laundry, halls, emptying dishwasher

ZBoy (4yo) - entry way, back tile, small trashes, emptying dishwasher

Many hands make light work! And I've noticed that we're getting a lot faster at pulling the house together when it is a wreck than we used to. Gone are the days of doing it all myself with little bitties pulling at my legs. Not that I did all that myself....I seem to remember it being more like the bare minimum back then!

Living Today

I'm working on this.

I tend to like to plan ahead, schedule, and organize. I can't tell you how many times I've been disappointed when something doesn't come about like I had it planned in my mind, and on paper.

RA has helped to to think on this Verse. My symptoms seem to change rather quickly sometimes and I no longer *count* on being able to do this or that. Most days I can....but sometimes I can't. And I find that when I am focused on what I can't do, or might not be able to do tomorrow, then I have no joy in what I CAN do.

I want to be thankful for whatever comes in the day without worrying about what might not be tomorrow.

Miscellaneous Monday

And it's actually a real Monday this time!

~Well it looks like my nephew can't come spend a couple of weeks with us as planned. Huge disappointment. It would've been FUN. But school starts too early now. Where has the summer gone?

~Speaking of school. This year I'm doing some new things. For one, I'm gonna have an official first day of school...just for fun. Schooling year round never has a *first* day ya know. But I'm planning some fun surprises and a party too! I guess it's time to get out the calendar and actually pick a first day.

~Baby boy fell asleep on the couch about 5:30 and is still out! What to do? Carry him to bed or let him sleep on the couch?

~My anniversary is this week! 23 years. I love you Honey.

~Before school starts in the mornings I've been having everyone report to the kitchen for a quick cooking job. This has made things so much easier. It may be cutting carrot sticks or cantaloupe. It may be sorting beans. It may just be freezing leftovers. Little things, but it's making the kitchen run smoother and we're all working together.

Today's meals...
Breakfast - cereal and strawberries
Lunch - pb sandwiches and carrot sticks
Dinner - I haven't re-named it yet but it was a new recipe that has pasta with chickpeas and tuna. Pretty good. But I noticed Honey pushing the tuna around on his plate and mumbling something about chicken. So I say, "no it's tuna!" And he decided it was better than he thought. Funny thing is that it was leftovers from last night's date night and he thought it was chicken then too!

It's ON!!

Oh Jes is excited! He's been talking about this for days.

Miscellaneous Monday On A Thursday

Because it feels like Monday to me! It's really not Monday??
Well it's the first work day after vacation and that just always means Monday doesn't it?
But we'll work with a Thursday I suppose.


~The laundry is almost entirely caught up already! Did you know that if you keep your same towel for the whole week it cuts your laundry in half?! Surprise!! Now I've tried the ol' keep-your-towel-and-cup thing before but we've never been able to stick to it. Since we had to do it in Branson I know it can be done. Soooo guess what we're learning this week?

~If you only use 11 cups a day instead of 33 you don't hafta run your dishwasher as much either. Imagine that.

~Our tadpoles grew while we were gone. You should see them swimming all over the place. They have tiny little eyes that you can see now. It's been a fun summer project so far.

~I'm making more pickles today. I'm almost out of dill and well...I guess most everybody is almost out of dill since it's so hot. But I think they will be pretty good without it. I'm hoping to actually get some canned. We've been eating 2 gallons of homemade pickles a week and there have not been enough to can yet.


~My man has a big project at work that has kept him pretty busy. This week he will work 8-10pm from home. We decided that would be a good time of still getting work done without interferring with family time. I love that I can sit by him and read and blog or whatever while he works.

~Some of my kids have finished the library summer reading program, some are almost finished, one isn't even close. We'll continue to work on some of that this week too and maybe cash in on some prizes!

~Did you know that if you go into a dark bathroom and shut the door and light a candle and say "Bloody Mary" and spin around that a woman will jump out of the mirror?

That's what my little church kids told me last night. I laughed out loud!! SERIOUSLY guys??
Oh yes, they were serious. All 5 of them.

So I looked at them and said very slowly .... I PROMISE THAT WILL NOT WORK.


Ask me how I know.
I can't believe after 30 years that same stupid thing is still going around in 5th grade.

~Last night was the last Bible study until Awana starts next month. :(
I enjoyed getting to talk about my little peeps to our CO friends in Branson. Love them!

~LB spent the morning sewing with one of my friends. LB loves spending time with her and Becky spoils her with a Sonic drink. They work on their sewing projects or cook or decorate or whatever. I am thankful for the time Becky invests in her.

~Today I had 3 younger kiddos peel 8 heads of garlic. They knocked it out in no time! The garlic press is too much for my hands right now and having peeled garlic in the fridge is a blessing.

Dinner - Josh's green pasta and bread, salad and hummus.

I'm Back!

Did you miss me? You didn't even know I was gone, did you? Oh well.....

We went on our first ever with 9 kids vacation! 3 whole days in Branson MO with friends from Colorado and some super friendly folks from Young Life. FANTASTIC time!!

We had this wonderfully spacious and clean cabin with 2 bedrooms, lots of bed space, a full kitchen, and 2 bathrooms. LOVED it.

We spent quite a bit of the 3 days at Silver Dollar City riding rides, eating, walking, and just being together. We haven't seen our friends in 2 years so there was a lot of catching up to do in person. It was the first theme park for most of our kids and just about everybody loved the roller coasters. Even Mally Bird.

The weather was nice and the porch was just right for reading and watching my guys play basketball. The pool was perfect.

We also got to participate in Young Life's family night and sing some worship songs. A sweet time for me after missing 2 weeks of church in a row.

It was so much fun being with my whole family...away from home, no dogs, paper plates, and no distractions. And can you believe we survived 3 whole days without doing laundry?

A huge thank you to our friends and the folks at Young Life for being so generous and hospitable. It was a GREAT 3 days!

Ramblings Of Recently

~Happy Birthday to me! Yesterday that is. And what a great day too. Sweet family, lots of smiles, thoughtful presents, pineapple custard, shopping, lunch with my man, and I even got to see some Immanuel peeps. Good day!

~Frog eggs in the swimming pool! Lots of them. My son went to do some pool maintenance and there were eggs everywhere. So now we have containers of water sitting around the house waiting for little tadpoles to make their appearance. Honey suggested dumping them into the goldfish pond....free fish food right? But it didn't fly with the kids.

~Still not feeling too great. But I can walk in the evenings again. I really don't know what I'd do without my kids. Nothing would ever get opened that's for sure! It has helped me to think through some organizing tips in the kitchen. Today I had Lane juice 8 lemons for me in the blender and we have a quart of lemon juice in the fridge. That will be a lot easier for me than squeezing lemons one at a time when I need them. Meg has done all the grocery shopping for the past week or so. What will I do when school starts??! I'm getting spoiled.

~We just ordered Eldest a Discover card since mine always seems to be in her purse. I got a new design while I was at it. Pink monogrammed! Why doesn't every credit card let you customize? Now I can't wait for it to come in the mail. Of course now I need a new wallet to match! Just kidding Honey.

~I am re-doing all the kids' jurisdictions and making school plans for the fall. Right now I'm just jotting down whatever comes to mind in the back of my planner. I've already filled up a whole page.

~Get this. For months, I've been trying to make a gluten free bread or cracker that does not have yeast, eggs, or potato starch. I've failed every single time. LB gets in the kitchen and whips one out the FIRST time!! And it's a sliceable kind of bread too! Amazing.

~I just finished 2 Samuel and now I'm reading 1 Chronicles. I realized that for the most part I've been reading my Bible in a study sort of way and less devotionally. :(

~I'm packing up the coffee pot. Since Honey's kidney stone, he's given up tea so that means the coffee pot has nothing to do. I plan to clean it up and store it in the boys' closet until somebody comes over who drinks coffee.

~This summer I'm trying to work on my Flylady routines.

~We get to see some friends from CO next week!! OH I'm excited! It's been way too long.

Today's meals...
Breakfast - cereal. Now we make 2 different ones. Jes makes the regular granola and LB makes a gluten free vegan one.

Lunch - Wordless bean soup and cornbread. Heads up to my VBS friends who haven't made your's yet...the spice packet is too sweet! Bean soup should not be sweet. Dump it out and use the beans for something else.

Dinner - Burgers for kids and a new bean burger recipe from Amy. I'm excited about this one. Oven fries, broccoli, and salad.

Snack - popcorn! I just re-discovered popcorn. There have been so many years that we either had babies or kids with braces that couldn't eat popcorn and I kinda forgot about it. But it's super easy and cheap and everyone likes it. Besides it's fun watching it pour out of the hot air popper. Portion it out in coffee filters and there's hardly even a mess to clean up. Most likely this will become a little boy's newest jurisdiction! :)

VBS Round 2

Our church just finished up our first vacation Bible school. 5 nights of presenting the gospel using 5 different colors. We didn't use pre-packaged VBS material for our first go round. It was sort of a homemade kind of backyard style VBS. I was a bit worried about that at first but it seemed to go off just fine.

It started months ago when the ladies of our church used our monthly craft morning to cut, glue, measure, and craft all things in preparation. That made everything so much easier.

A few families from the church got together to grill hamburgers for some nearby apartment complexes inviting the folks to a free lunch and VBS. We did this twice, passing out fliers, food, and drinks. We only had 1 family from the apartments come this year. But I'm hopeful that maybe in the future that will grow.

My goal for VBS was for it to be an outreach. We had around 28 kids every night and 4 of them were unchurched. It was nice for me to get to know the church kids a little better since I'm never around them much. But my heart really went out to those 4. One in particular who only came twice. He lives at the apartments and I'm praying about a way we can reach out to him again.

Every night was fun music, lesson, crafts, games and......CLOWNS! And the clowns really took our VBS over the top. Fun In The Son is a Christian clown ministry and they did a tremendous job all week long. Such fun. So many smiling kiddos.

That's it. I'm done VBS'ing for another year. It was a wonderful experience working with our church and watching it all come together. I loved all the happy faces and the willing hands.

And I'm already thinking about next year......

A Big Day For These Two!

Mally comes to me this morning and tells me her teeth itch. And she just doesn't know why....with her arms out in that question mark style of hers.

Itchy teeth? So I say she should go brush them again. She runs back minutes later and exclaims, "I figured it out! I have a wiggly tooth!"

Really? But she's only 5. And besides, she's my baby girl. And baby girls don't have wiggly teeth right?

It was TRUE. And ohhhhh is she delighted! She just couldn't wait until her Dad and siblings came home from TKD to show it off. And then there's this guy. My oldest son asked permission to take him out in the pool without his floaties to teach him to swim. Ooooo....hmmmm.....huge responsibility. But then again he can touch the bottom with his tippy toes, so ok.

In no time we were gathered around the pool cheering him on as he swam from one thing to another (minus the floaties) and even dove down to touch the bottom! Way to go ZBaby! And way to go CT. I hope they both remember this always. Sweet to have one brother teaching another something so big and important.
