Wacky Wednesday at the library today. That is story time for 1-5th graders. For us that is LB and J-Man. So the story time guy has this long snake line of toilet paper on the floor. He starts to explain that the toilet paper is a time line of the earth. The beginning of the toilet paper is when the earth was created. The end of it is now.
So he asked the kids if anyone knew how old the earth was. At this point I'm sitting here wondering where this is going and hoping it'll be good. After all, he did use the word "created". A couple of kids raise their hand to guess and they were all wrong. "Nope", he says, "it is 500 billion years old". (Oh brother) LB's shoulders droop. She pulls her brother back and whispers in his ear.
Next he goes on to explain how the earth started as a fiery ball and finally cooled down enough to sustain life. He asked the kids to stand on the tp line at the point where they thought it was. LB withdraws and watches. She looks back at me with a roll of the eyes. She is quite talented at rolling those brown eyes when appropriate.
Then the guy says that life began as a single cell organism. Stand on the tp at that point. Bla, bla, bla. Next he gets their attention when he mentions dinosaurs. Where on the tp did dinosaurs appear? LB points to the beginning of the toilet paper. I smiled at her and told her she could go ahead. So she takes J-Man and they stand at the beginning of the toilet paper line! I'm sure the guy thought they weren't participating.
I was looking around at the other moms to see if anyone was thinking that this story time activity was unusual. They all seemed to be having a great time with it. When it was over, LB comes over to me looking at me out of the top of her eyes with the "can you believe that Mom?" look. HA!
Wacky Wednesday isn't for us.
